D-JOINTS Collaborative Composites Joining Project Begins

Tue, 12 May, 2020

The kick-off meeting for the collaborative D-JOINTS project took place on 11 May, 2020. The project is being coordinated by TWI along with the Brunel Composites Centre and Cranfield University. The topic manager for the project is Evektor.

The D-JOINTS Project will explore new innovative composite-metal joints with enhanced lightning strike protection for use in the aerospace industry.

The joints will be designed using a dedicated sizing tool with key design parameters identified and integrated in the tool. The material properties for the design of each joint will be determined with the use of a database with the joints finally set to be integrated into a composite nose part. Manufactured demonstrators will be tested for lightning strike protection properties.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the kick-off meeting took place via a teleconference between representatives of Brunel Composites Centre, Cranfield University, Evektor, the European Commission and TWI.

The project has received funding from the Clean Sky 2 Joint Undertaking (JU) under grant agreement number 887042. The JU receives support from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme and the Clean Sky 2 JU members other than the Union.
